ABOUT THE SUMMER H.S. PROGRAM:
The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music Summer High School Program offers specialized training in music business entrepreneurship complemented by direct instruction on the latest software and hardware used in studios worldwide to create and distribute commercially successful recordings.

This unique educational experience thrusts our select group of participants into the heart of the music industry with instruction by some of the most respected experts in the field – our faculty – all of whom are working professionals who share the passion for challenging the youth of today to define the music industry of tomorrow.

During this intense 4-week period, students become entrepreneurs-in-training by studying how music is recorded, produced and distributed to consumers.   To complement the technical training based in the department’s audio workstation lab and world-class Dennis Riese Family Recording Studio, students will also learn how music companies are conceptualized, created and grown as well as how new technologies are changing the way we hear music.  Exposure to a wide range of current practices, as well as to those executives and artists changing the rules in the new digital era, are core components of this instruction.

Outside of class, excursions to recording facilities, music venues, record labels, festivals and more will immerse students in New York City – the hub of the global music industry.  Master-class lectures by known innovators and visionaries on topics such as touring, artist management and digital media will be offered exclusively to participants of this program.

Ultimately, the summer high school program will have a strong focus on educating students how to be responsible and informed makers, consumers and distributors of popular music.

COURSES:

Students will enroll in the following courses, for a total of 6 elective credits:

REMU-UT 0500 Fundamentals of Music Production – 2 credits
Students will acquire an in-depth, theoretical and practical knowledge of Digital Audio Workstations through this lab-based workshop. An emphasis will be made on file management, and system configurations. Students will then start using Pro Tools and Logic Pro, learning the operating modes and tools, gain structure and multi-tracking techniques, using overdubs to build an arrangement. The class will round out with techniques for editing and “comping,” consolidating tracks and preparing the files for the mix session.

REMU-UT 0501 Foundations of Music Business - 2 credits
This course provides a general overview of the different segments of the music industry.  Topics include: key players and their roles in generating revenue streams; common creative, business and legal problems that arise in, and range of business transactions that govern, the day to day operation of different business ventures in the industry; record label operations, marketing, promotion, music publishing, touring, new business models and career opportunities.

INSTRUCTORS:

Lauren Davis – Music Business/Arts&Culture
An experienced music business attorney, Davis has been teaching at the Department of Recorded Music at New York University since 2003, and joined the Department’s full-time faculty in 2006. Davis has initiated, developed and taught numerous courses on the legal and business aspects of the music industry. The focus and foundation of her teaching and professional work include: Music Industry Contract and Deal Negotiations, Artist Representation, Acquisition of Rights, Intellectual Property law, Business Start-Ups, Music Licensing, New Business Models, Music Business curriculum, design and development. In her capacity as an attorney, Davis has advised high profile artists such as the Allman Brothers, LL Cool J, Reverend Run (Run DMC), Donnie McClurkin, Boyz II Men, Salsa legend Celia Cruz, songwriters such as Michael Masser (“Greatest Love of All”), Albert Hammond (“It  Never Rains in Southern California”), songwriter-producers such as Eve Nelson (Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Raven Simone, Eva Cassidy) and Andrea Martin (Monica, En Vogue, Sean Kingston, Melanie Fiona, Leona Lewis, and others).

Bo Pericic – Music Production/Arts&Culture
Bo Pericic – aka “Peri” was a member of the first graduating class from the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music. While in school, Peri was very involved with, and started breaking out into the dance music scene. Along with DJ partner Dom Filopei, Peri produced and released the hit song “Anthem,” under the guise “Filo & Peri,” which topped the Billboard dance chart at #1, and entered the UK Top 40. While still at NYU, Peri remixed the Doobie Brothers classic “Long Train Runnin’,” and had one of his songs appear in the movie Reno 911!: Miami.Since graduating from NYU in 2007, Peri has accumulated over 2 million frequent flyer miles by playing as a DJ in over 30 countries. He hasplayed alongside DJ Tiesto in the Czech Republic, Lady Gaga in Malta, and toured with dance heavyweights Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dykthroughout the world.Always the innovator, Peri has designed and created a transparent touch screen that has become a new element to his DJ performances. He has been able to blend technology with music, and his new device has taken the dance, and corporate community by storm. His new company, “Glass Front Media” utilizes the technology for retail advertising and GFM’s first installation is currently in process in Times Square. Peri is still an active producer and performing DJ, and has now branched out into teaching in an attempt to become a part of the faculty that has allowed him to succeed outside of college. As he puts it, “It’s a dream come true. I’m excited to give back and play my part in molding the future generation of music producers.”
