Patrick Derivaz on Music and Sound Design

Friday, March 9th from 4:00PM – 5:30PM
194 Mercer Street, Dennis Riese Family Recording Studio 510

Sound and music influence, enrich and are an integral part of most aspects of our daily life. They are almost always part of a visual experience. During this workshop, we will take a short video and add to it sonic elements from musical instruments, voices, various natural or industrial sources. These sounds will then be manipulated to create different “soundtracks” conveying various moods to the visual depending on their arrangements and juxtaposition to it. We will also make sure during the entire process that we are getting proper audio levels. Students will be encouraged to participate and express their creativity.

Patrick composes, produces, performs, records and mixes a wide range of innovative and cross-cultural styles of music. He has worked with many artists, including Erikah Badu, Jeff Buckley, De La Soul, Barry Manilow, and Charles Mingus Band to name a few, and his music has been featured in films, TV (Discovery and Travel Channels) and jingles (Burger King, McDonald’s). In addition to teaching and chairing multiple committees, Patrick also works as the FOH engineer if major US clubs, including Summerstage (Central Park, NYC).

Curating a Scene- Questlove from Lyonshare on Vimeo.

By ReMu's Curating Live Music Events Professor, Kobi Wu-Pasmore:

To support the curriculum of Curating Live Music Events, I interviewed Questlove of The Roots to talk about his role in creating an iconic (and arguably defining) moment in Hip Hop culture, "Dave Chappelle's Block Party."

About the movie: Ecstatic and unknowledgeable of where they were going, 1000's of Dave Chappelle fans filled busses that shuttled them to the anonymous location in Bed Stuy in 2004. They learned of the event on either the radio or random internet sites and joined in voluntarily with only the promise of Dave Chappell's presence, and good music.

That day, it rained- HARD- but it did not stop the fans or the musicians from withstanding the weather to be a part of a major music moment- Dave Chappelle the master of ceremonies, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Kanye West, Common, Dead Prez, The Fugees and little known artist named John Legend all on one stage at the end of a block, playing together, flowing from one to the next with energy and effervescence that is witnessed it seems only once a decade.

About the interview with Brother Question: Good friends for over 10 years, Ahmir and I exchanged familiar banter and inside jokes for a good portion of our chat, which lasted just over an hour. True to form and a touch of pageantry, his demeanor would go from jokester-mode to musical genius and back again. He'd play the drums while he spoke of his musical journey as if he were keeping time for himself like he has for so many others. And at heights he'd soberly reflected on monumental talents that have "disappeared" over the years as a result of fear, insecurity or as he calls it self-sabotage.

Quest's comments about the concert that day surprised me. I won't spoil it- you must watch the video- but he was not the gallant self proclaimed "conductor" as he is today. Instead, that day, he was the humble and super talented, musician like the rest of his friends on stage, that was having fun doing what he loves. It's just that simple. But, unlike his friends, he had a premonition that that day on the corner of Downing and Quincy in Bed Stuy in 2004 was not the dawning of something new, instead it was the end of an era.

Every so often there are moments that will never be repeated or have a sequel, no matter how much we try. But for me, that day marked a landmark moment for the soundtrack in my life that shouldn't be repeated. It's just golden.
