The Rise of the Artist/Mogul:
How Hip-Hop Artists Turned the Tables on the Music Business

WHEN: Tuesday, March 6, 12:45-1:45 pm
WHERE: 721 Broadway, Room 006

ABOUT THE EVENT:

For most of music business history, artists remained serfs; suffering financially until they sold at a superstar-level. In the 1990s and 2000s, hip-hop artists and industry advocates transformed the relationship between master and servant. In this lecture, we’ll explore the roles of four key players in this transformation: the Wu-Tang Clan, Cash Money Records, Roc-A-Fella (Jay-Z and Damon Dash), and a little-known activist and artist advocate named Wendy Day.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dan Charnas is the author of The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop (New American Library/Penguin) and the coauthor of Def Jam: The First 25 Years of the Last Great Record Label (Rizzoli). Charnas was one of the first writers for The Source and part of a generation of young writers who helped create hip-hop journalism; he also served as VP of A&R for Rick Rubin’s American Recordings. Charnas is currently Editorial Director for InteractiveOne and an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

RSVP is required. This event is open to all New York University students, faculty, staff, & alumni. A valid NYU ID is required for entrance to the building. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Patrick Derivaz on Music and Sound Design

Friday, March 9th from 4:00PM – 5:30PM
194 Mercer Street, Dennis Riese Family Recording Studio 510

Sound and music influence, enrich and are an integral part of most aspects of our daily life. They are almost always part of a visual experience. During this workshop, we will take a short video and add to it sonic elements from musical instruments, voices, various natural or industrial sources. These sounds will then be manipulated to create different “soundtracks” conveying various moods to the visual depending on their arrangements and juxtaposition to it. We will also make sure during the entire process that we are getting proper audio levels. Students will be encouraged to participate and express their creativity.

Patrick composes, produces, performs, records and mixes a wide range of innovative and cross-cultural styles of music. He has worked with many artists, including Erikah Badu, Jeff Buckley, De La Soul, Barry Manilow, and Charles Mingus Band to name a few, and his music has been featured in films, TV (Discovery and Travel Channels) and jingles (Burger King, McDonald’s). In addition to teaching and chairing multiple committees, Patrick also works as the FOH engineer if major US clubs, including Summerstage (Central Park, NYC).

Please note: this course takes place on location in Jamaica

Jamaica has had more influence on American popular music than any other island, partly due to the unprecedented international impact of Bob Marley. His success was rooted in the rich traditions of Jamaican music, which fuse African retention from slavery days with re-interpretive absorption of African-American music and the quadrilles and classical music of the slave-owners, who relied on enslaved musicians for their entertainment. Today, the impact of Jamaican music is arguably broader than ever, as it has shaped contemporary sounds such as Hip Hop and Reggaeton, which dominate the vast Spanish-speaking market in the U.S, all across South America, and beyond.

In this course, students will have experiences that build their knowledge of Jamaican culture and its function in politics, society, art, and the community as well as stimulate their own creativity. To learn about Jamaican music’s past, present and future, students will be immersed in dynamic cultural and experiential activities such as: a tour of Studio One, experience a Rasta Grounation, a workshop on how to build a drum, visits to historical music studios and radio stations, guided tours around historical reggae sites, live concerts, museums, and much more. Students will meet key politicians (Minister of Culture and Youth, Olivia “Babsy” Grange), artists (leading dancehall producer, Steven ‘Di Genius’ and his father, Studio One veteran and reggae legend, Freddie McGregor, legendary guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith), executives (Chris Blackwell, Founder Island Def Jam), and cultural advocates who have kept Jamaica at the forefront of music and whose job it is to nurture Jamaican culture in these challenging times for the entertainment industry.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Vivien Goldman is a London-born writer, broadcaster, adjunct professor and post-punk musician. She previously developed and taught courses in Reggae and Punk for the Clive Davis Institute. Her journalism appears in the New York Times, Black Book, the UK Observer and New Statesman. The most recent of her five books is “The Book of Exodus: The Making and Meaning of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Album of the Century,” (Three Rivers Press/Random House) which was described as “vivid and intimate” by Rolling Stone. Her second book on Marley, it includes the brief period she spent as his PR at Island Records before the band was famous, right after her graduation from university in the early 1970s.

After quitting Bob’s PR to become a full-time journalist in the UK rock weeklies, Goldman continued a lengthy association with the label, covering many of their other artists such as Grace Jones, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Aswad, Burning Spear and U2. Combined with her connections with the early US hip-hop movement, as Def Jam was forming, Goldman’s course offers a unique and revealing insight into the progress of one indie label, an industry — and an entrée to parallel worlds that co-exist within popular music itself.

Starting February 2010, The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music will be inaugurating a new intensive 12-week workshop for high school students, called Future Music Moguls.

This innovative new workshop program is designed to introduce talented high school juniors to all aspects of the contemporary music business – including songwriting, production, marketing, promotion, publicity, branding and mobile and digital music – with a special focus on developing entrepreneurial and leadership skills. In learning about music entrepreneurship, students receive a basic introduction to issues in financial literacy that can be applied to a wide range of future activities.

The lead instructor for the twelve-week workshop is Jayson Jackson – a leading music executive (Bad Boy, Virgin Records) and Broadway producer (Bridge & Tunnel) who has also served as artist manager to platinum-selling recording superstars ranging from Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Q-tip, Spank Rock and Santigold.

FREE to participants, the program is held at the department’s state-of-the-art facilities on Saturdays starting in February and ending in May. Applicants, typically in the middle of their junior year, hail from high schools in the five boroughs of New York City as well as from Westchester County, Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Approximately 12-15 students will be selected to attend the workshop.

Did we mention that it’s FREE for chosen participants???? Why, yes, I think we did!

Priority application deadline is Friday, October 16, 2009. Wow, that date is coming right up. For more on requirements, dates, deadlines and how to apply click here.
