ABOUT DEF JAM
Def Jam Recordings was started by young entrepreneurs Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin in the early 1980s, out of Rubin’s Weinstein Hall dorm room. 25 years later, the once-independent label has launched the careers of some of music’s greatest superstars (L.L. Cool J, Run D.M.C., Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Ja Rule, Rihanna, Ashanti, and Kanye West, etc) and changed the face of global youth culture.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Celebrating the company’s 25th Anniversary, the just-released book Def Jam Recordings (Rizzoli New York) is a stunning oral history of Def Jam in the words of its artists and top executives, taken from interviews and seamlessly told as a narrative of no-holds barred recollections and anecdotes.

ABOUT THE EVENT
During this rare conversation event, authors Bill Adler, Cey Adams and Dan Charnas will present a video/slide lecture and Q&A about their new book. The discussion will be moderated by Tisch Photography and Imaging Chair, Deborah Willis and Recorded Music Artistic Director, Jason King.

Instructor(s): Vivien Goldman

Monday-Sunday | January 3-14, 2012

Please note: this course takes place on location in Jamaica

Jamaica has had more influence on American popular music than any other island, partly due to the unprecedented international impact of Bob Marley. His success was rooted in the rich traditions of Jamaican music, which fuse African retention from slavery days with re-interpretive absorption of African-American music and the quadrilles and classical music of the slave-owners, who relied on enslaved musicians for their entertainment. Today, the impact of Jamaican music is arguably broader than ever, as it has shaped contemporary sounds such as Hip Hop and Reggaeton, which dominate the vast Spanish-speaking market in the U.S, all across South America, and beyond.

In this course, students will have experiences that build their knowledge of Jamaican culture and its function in politics, society, art, and the community as well as stimulate their own creativity. To learn about Jamaican music’s past, present and future, students will be immersed in dynamic cultural and experiential activities such as: a tour of Studio One, experience a Rasta Grounation, a workshop on how to build a drum, visits to historical music studios and radio stations, guided tours around historical reggae sites, live concerts, museums, and much more. Students will meet key politicians (Minister of Culture and Youth, Olivia “Babsy” Grange), artists (leading dancehall producer, Steven ‘Di Genius’ and his father, Studio One veteran and reggae legend, Freddie McGregor, legendary guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith), executives (Chris Blackwell, Founder Island Def Jam), and cultural advocates who have kept Jamaica at the forefront of music and whose job it is to nurture Jamaican culture in these challenging times for the entertainment industry.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Vivien Goldman is a London-born writer, broadcaster, adjunct professor and post-punk musician. She previously developed and taught courses in Reggae and Punk for the Clive Davis Institute. Her journalism appears in the New York Times, Black Book, the UK Observer and New Statesman. The most recent of her five books is “The Book of Exodus: The Making and Meaning of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Album of the Century,” (Three Rivers Press/Random House) which was described as “vivid and intimate” by Rolling Stone. Her second book on Marley, it includes the brief period she spent as his PR at Island Records before the band was famous, right after her graduation from university in the early 1970s.

After quitting Bob’s PR to become a full-time journalist in the UK rock weeklies, Goldman continued a lengthy association with the label, covering many of their other artists such as Grace Jones, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Aswad, Burning Spear and U2. Combined with her connections with the early US hip-hop movement, as Def Jam was forming, Goldman’s course offers a unique and revealing insight into the progress of one indie label, an industry — and an entrée to parallel worlds that co-exist within popular music itself.

ABOUT THE FILM:
Uganda has been called one of the worst places on earth to be a child. In the South, children face the threat of poverty and disease. In the North, these threats are enflamed by a brutal, mindless war inflicted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (L.R.A.) that has divided families, displaced millions, and led to the abduction and mutilation of tens of thousands of children resulting in the deterioration of identity and culture.

Bouncing Cats is the inspiring story of one man’s attempt to create a better life for the children of Uganda using the unlikely tool of hip-hop with a focus on b-boy culture and breakdance. In 2006, Abraham “Abramz” Tekya, a Ugandan b-boy and A.I.D.S. orphan created Breakdance Project Uganda (B.P.U.). The dream was to establish a free workshop that would empower, rehabilitate and heal the community by teaching youth about b-boy culture. Based in Kampala, Uganda, B.P.U. has recently expanded to include permanent classes in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Abramz teaches classes three times a week to hundreds of kids from all parts of the country. Many of the children are homeless, victims of war and poverty, and few can afford proper schooling yet they walk from miles away to attend the B.P.U. classes. As Abramz says, “This is where many people’s pride is. It’s a skill that no one can take away from us.”

Crazy Legs, one of the founding members of the world famous Rock Steady Crew, visited Uganda after receiving an invitation from Abramz to teach b-boy classes. What he discovered upon his arrival was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Traveling throughout Uganda, from the southern slums to the war-torn North, Crazy Legs encountered a passion for hip-hop and desire to learn amongst the most squalid conditions.

Bouncing Cats follows Abramz, Crazy Legs, and Breakdance Project Uganda on a journey to use hip-hop culture for positive social change. The film features narration by Common and interviews with Mos Def, Will.I.Am, and K’Naan.

By ReMu’s Topics in Recorded Music: James Brown Professor, Harry Weinger:

Folks,

Holy Smokes.

Seven weeks built to last night, a packed 2.75 hours with a recap of the course, some video clips and two surprise visits (above). Witnessing the night along with two dozen students was Douglas Wolk, author of the course text James Brown: Live At The Apollo, and Andre Torres, editor of Wax Poetics magazine.

Our final class featured surprise visits from hip-hop producer and James Brown fan Salaam Remi (second from right), and members of Full Force, the production-writing-performing team that gave James Brown his final chart smashes, “I’m Real” and “Static”; with Salaam above from left are Full Force’s Shy Shy, Paul Anthony and Bowlegged Lou.

Salaam detailed his fascination with James Brown records as one of his earliest memories; working with Nas to create “Get Down,” one of the most memorable uses of James Brown samples, among others; and revealing to the class some of his production secrets.

The Full Force crew richly and often hilariously recalled working with James Brown with love, grace and great songs while navigating his moods in one of the Godfather’s darker periods – and managing to give him two significant, long-lasting hits. They also dispensed clear career advice, noting how they have been able to keep working with a wide range of artists – from the Backstreet Boys to Nicki Minaj – through the industry’s hills and valleys.

And this was a week after a fantastic talk by John Carlin (Red Hot, funnygarbage.com) and a drop-in from Charlie Midnight (”Living In America”). Previously we were visited by world-renowned bassist Christian McBride, a JB fan who previously directed Brown in a special Hollywood Bowl performance, and Alan Leeds, Brown’s former tour manager and publicist who is now the world’s pre-eminent JB discographer, and is the co-editor of the primary class text.

Super bad, and on the good foot!
